Davina's father, Sandy, appeared in a Doctor Who story: 'The Unicorn and the Wasp'; and Sandy's Daughter-in Law was also in an episode: 'The Doctor's Daughter'.
We certainly are seeing more Scottish actors in main roles in Doctor Who of late: Peter Capaldi, Michelle Gomez (Missy), Neve McIntosh (Madame Vastra); so a Scottish companion shouldn't come as too much of a surprise.
