In order to join the actors' union, Equity, David (born David John McDonald) had to change his name, as there was already a member of the union named David McDonald.

His parents had attempted to persuade him to use a family name, such as Blair or McLeod.
However, as David has said: "At 16, I wasn't having any of that,"

Then he saw Pet Shop Boy, Neil Tennant mentioned in a copy of 'Smash Hits' magazine, and thought Tennant would be a good stage name.

(Coincidentally, Neil Tennant had started working as news editor of the magazine in 1982, becoming Assistant Editor the following year. He also edited the The Smash Hits Yearbooks in 1982, 1983 and 1984)
